Celebrating a Mission Accomplished

SITUATION REPORT

TYPE: Routine
CLASSIFICATION: Constable (or above) EYES ONLY
FROM: War Wolves, ECHO Team:

LOCATION: Farrow and surrounding areas, Tamast Forest, Sidoniss

NARRATIVE:
Having purged the caves near the village of Farrow of the [[Rodaag Wildfist } Rodaag]] threat, ECHO Team contemplated what to do next. Deputy Gurz seemed intent on continuing the wholesale slaughter of whatever remained in the caves. Marshal Tanko pondered the prospects of pressing on to the ‘Orc Abbey’ described by the goblin captive, Pothal, verses returning to Farrow to rest and resupply. Acolyte Balad disclosed the Sending Stone – his ability to communicate with War Wolves leadership – and suggested returning to Farrow to rest, transmit a message, and await further instructions. The enigmatic Teifling, Everlit, remained quiet and allusive {Preparer’s Note: Neto guide me by his golden light, I shall keep a vigilant watch over this new, mysterious aspect of our party}.

Regrouping in the main cavern, we observed clusters of goblin civilians fleeing the caves. This fact seemed to satisfy Germy that the Horde threat had been broken, but still, Feend was not convinced. The deputy decided to scout some of the side passages while the rest of the team waited at the cave opening. He returned shortly thereafter, not speaking of what he witnessed, but now seemed satisfied with the Marshal’s decision to return to Farrow.

At the village, ECHO Team immediately reported to Mayor Gerrard that the Rodaag threat had been eliminated and life there should now begin to return to normal. A celebration ensued and lasted long into the night. Neto’s benevolence was praised, friendships were enhanced, and the heavy hearts of the villagers were lifted {Preparer’s Note: To be honest, I do not remember most of the night’s celebration. I awoke in my bed the following morning, still fully dressed}.

The morning’s message from Priestess Ren directed ECHO Team to vacate Farrow and RTB; return to the Martyrium of Ren with the necromantic amulet and all situations reports in hand. Anxious to comply, Fergus rounded up the rest of the party, locating Marshal Tanko at the blacksmith’s residence {Preparer’s Note: The Marshal must have had more negotiations to conduct with her that lasted late into the night. Germy looked haggard and hungover. He must not have gotten much sleep}. Explaining we were ordered back to Sidoniss, Marshal Tanko sprang into action. He procured more mounts from the stable master (some were lost in the excursion to the caves), and after some further reconnaissance of the area to be sure no taint of Rodaag remained, ECHO Team departed Farrow. To note: War Wolves HQ Logistics Division (WW-04) should expect a Form 62-04, ‘Reimbursement of Provincial Equipment/Mounts/Material Lost in Service to Neto’, to be submitted by the mayor of Farrow for compensation of gear ECHO Team needed to complete this mission.

Requisitioning the last three remaining horses in Farrow for our trip home, Deputy Gurz was left with a burro named Night Train. After collecting the last of our gear and saying our goodbyes, ECHO Team got underway. On the first day of our expected four days of travel, the party was visited by the Centaur-like females that helped us uncover the mouth of the Horde cave. They left a gift for Deputy Gurz on the road ahead of us before sprinting off into the forest, a pair of fine leather gloves. The second day was uneventful but on the third day, while traveling through the Tamast Forest, the party was beset by creatures resembling small, yellow dragons. They emitted a weird, child-like laughter and seemed to take delight in confounding and harassing the party. After failing to confront the creatures directly, ECHO Team moved on as quickly as we could. But that night Marshal Tanko awoke to the braying of Night Train. Feend was gone and it seemed his new mount was worried for him. We searched the surrounding forest and eventually found the deputy sitting stoic and cross-armed in front of a huge fire, seemingly of his own creation. When pressed, he would not speak of why he had wandered off from the camp, and eventually we all returned and slept the rest of the night uneventfully.

Finally, on the fourth day, ECHO Team arrived at the glorious, shining metropolis of Sidoniss, beacon of Neto’s righteousness and might. Upon reporting to the Martyrium of Ren, ECHO Team debriefed the Priestess, each in turn. Even the mysterious Everlit was granted a private audience in the Priestess’ chamber. Our situation reports were compiled and presented.

The team was given R&R until our the next mission brief. In the meantime, we are free to enjoy the luxuries of Sidoniss and our stations in the War Wolves. Neto be praised!

SITUATION REPORT

TYPE: Supplemental
CLASSIFICATION: Constable (or above) EYES ONLY
FROM: War Wolves, ECHO Team:
Germy Tanko, Marshal
Feend Gurz, Deputy Soldier
Fergus Balad, Acolyte
Everlit (Association UNKNOWN)

LOCATION: Cave system NW of Farrow, Horde raiding party lair

NARRATIVE:
After tracking the blasphemous disciples of Rodaag to a cave system uncovered northeast of Farrow, ECHO Team decimating a pair of Ogres foolish enough to stand against the War Wolves. As the last vestiges of resistance disappeared deeper into the cave, Marshal Tanko, Deputy Gurz, and Acolyte Balad all felt inexplicably uplifted. They realized the hard-fought battles and unraveled mysteries of the last few days were fueling their talents, increasing their abilities to better serve His Most Mighty, Neto.

They quickly secured the main chamber, noting several side passages while searching for evidence of the foul deeds perpetrated by Rodaag’s forces. Without warning, a female Tiefling appeared and made her presence known. She explained her name was Everlit, and had been instructed to join our group in Farrow. Although lacking key information that would indicate association to the War Wolves, Everlit was accepted into the group by Marshal Tanko {Preparer’s Note: Submit Form 24-02, ‘Personnel File Request and Background Check’, for Everlit upon return to Fortress of Might to determine group affiliation and chain-of-command}. The Marshal reasoned her magical aptitude would prove useful in the coming battles {Preparer’s Note: To be fair, her charm and allure made it difficult to dismiss her outright}.

ECHO Team moved outside to a nearby stand of trees in order to inform Everlit of the current situation and discuss strategies. After an hour, the team reentered the cave refreshed. They then investigated the chamber to determine the most heavily trafficked passage, hoping it would lead to the remaining Horde opposition.

After finding the most promising passage, Deputy Gurz scouted ahead using the shadows to his advantage. The passage soon ended at an intersection. As Feend contemplated, a goblin emerged on his right, scimitar at the ready. Feend tumbled away into the darkness, alerting Germy to the presence of danger. The Marshal sprinted forward and sent his axe flying at the goblin. The enchanted weapon buried itself into the filthy creature’s skull; and as the goblin slumped to the ground, the axe magically returned to Germy’s hand.

Feend continued down the left passage a short distance before entering a small cave containing several goblin elderly and children. Anxious to discover the remaining Rodaag threat, Feend began to vigorously question the occupants {Preparer’s Note: While his enthusiasm is appreciated, some of Deputy Gurz’ activities border on zealotry. I will continue to monitor his conduct and attempt to defuse any malevolent situations}. It soon became apparent which passage led to the goblin leader of the Horde contingent; and his name, Hark. Marshal Tanko took Fergus and Everlit back to the main chamber, while Feend scouted the surrounding passages.

Eventually, the party regrouped and prepared to confront Hark and his guards. Moving into position Feend quickly scouted the room; identifying Hark, four of his personal guard, and one of the goblin archers from the initial skirmish at the cave opening. Deputy Gurz immediately loosed a firebolt at Hark, landing a devastating blow. But the vile goblin maintained his footing. Marshal Tanko entered the room and engaged the two closest guards, quickly felling one. Acolyte Balad called out to Neto for divine assistance and a glowing, spectral warhammer appeared in the room to lend its holy might to the conflict. Even Everlit entered the fray, moving into the room so she might use her arcane arts against these defilers of Neto’s Will.

Marshal Tanko barked an order that one of the enemies should be taken alive. A moment later Hark rushed toward Everlit; perhaps an attempt at a getaway, perhaps to maul the seemingly weakest member of the party. This was a poor calculation on Hark’s part. Three crackling balls of energy appeared at Everlit’s side and streaked across the room into the chest of the charging goblin. He fell in a heap and moved no more. The rest of the guards were quickly dispatched, and luckily, the Marshal was able to subdue the goblin archer by knocking him unconscious with the flat of his axe head.

After ECHO Team secured Hark’s chamber, the captured goblin was revived and questioned. His gave his name as Pothal, and he was quick to divulge that the Horde contingent in this area was under the leadership of an orc named Longtusk, and that he had recently departed for the Orc Abbey one week’s ride away. {Preparer’s Note: This information was gained with Gurz’ knife firmly pressed against the prisoner’s neck}. When asked about the rest of the cave system, Pothal told of ‘bats and dark oozes’ to the east. While questioning the goblin, Fergus noticed a narrow passage in the back of the cave. Following it, he discovered a small, empty room with a coffer sitting on the floor. Fergus took the coffer and returned to the party.

At this point, ECHO Team has several courses of action to decide upon. They include:

  • Finish clearing the cavern of Rodaag’s Horde filth
  • Track the loathsome orc Longtusk to the abbey Pothal described
  • Return to Farrow to rest and regroup
  • Report back to the Fortress of Might, for refitting and follow-on mission brief

SITUATION REPORT

TYPE: Routine
CLASSIFICATION: Constable (or above) EYES ONLY
FROM: War Wolves, ECHO Team:
Germy Tanko, Marshal
Killian Sharpe, Marshal (DECEASED)
Feend Gurz, Deputy Soldier
Fergus Balad, Acolyte

LOCATION: Village of Farrow, and surrounding area

NARRATIVE:
Following the confrontation with a Horde raiding party earlier in the evening (See previous SITREP), ECHO Team members Germy Tanko and Fergus Balad retired to the Mallard Inn, to regroup and rest. As the newest team member, Balad was brought up to speed on the following occurrences:

  • The circumstances surrounding the death of Marshall Killian Sharpe
  • A magical amulet regained by ECHO Team
  • Possible reasons behind the appearance of the Horde raiding party

Suddenly, a citizen burst through the door and called for aid; the mayor’s house was ablaze. All rushed out to assist. After joining in the effort to control the flames, Marshall Tanko realized team member Feend Gurz was not present. Tanko called out for him to report, hoping he could supply some usable intel. Feend appeared (quite suddenly) and began to debrief the Marshall. Balad went to check on the mayor, who appeared to be recovering from smoke inhalation and heat exposure; concerned citizens surrounded them. The mayor explained his wife, Nioma, was still in the smoldering house. Fergus immediately ran in, followed closely by Tanko and Gurz.

Unfortunately, the mayor’s wife was found, deceased, in the basement safe-room. It was apparent she had been overcome by the heat and smoke of the fire {Preparer’s Note: Proper protocol was followed regarding disposition of her remains}. Upon returning to the mayor with the remains, he seemed to indicate the fire must have been set by the same orcs that had harassed the village earlier in the evening. The mayor spoke of an army member starting the blaze, and told the team members of an orc lair in the woods to the northwest of the village {Preparer’s Note: The mayor was, most likely, delirious from his recent loss, and obviously meant the Horde raiding party when he said ‘army’. Nonetheless, ECHO Team will remain vigilant for a larger Horde force in the area}. The War Wolves regrouped at the inn to discuss future mission plans. Also at this time, Fergus was presented the amulet for analysis. Using his basic theological training, he was able to identify symbols of necromantic origin upon the talisman. Further analysis, using spellcraft, will be conducted; expect results on next report.

The team took the next day to rest: Marshall Tanko spent the day in deep, prolonged negotiations with the local blacksmith to parlay for improved armor; Feend searched the village for supplies and intel; and Fergus located the remains of Killian Sharpe and rendered proper burial rites, in accordance with the doctrine of His Most Mighty, Neto.

On the following morning, the three departed Farrow on horseback, intending to locate the orc lair in the woods. Tanko took the lead as they entered the cover of trees. Soon after, the team was forced to dispatch a trio of minor earth elementals, apparently stirred up by restless spirits in the woods. Following this encounter, the team carried on. Balad was now in the lead, and after plodding deeper into the forest, he and his horse fell into a camouflaged pit place directly in their path. Four centaur-like females {Preparer’s Note: Possibly Wood Nymphs} appeared, as if out of nowhere, armed and determined to protect their territory. It was only due to the quick wit and diplomacy of Feend Gurz that ECHO Team was saved from another battle.

Only after explaining that the War Wolves were here to dispose of The Horde threat, did the female contingent agree to assist. After extricating Fergus and his horse from the pit, the team was led to a cave opening by their guides, who then effortlessly melted back into the forest.

Once inside the cave, the team was quickly beset by two huge ogres and four goblin archers. Germy Tanko quickly disposed of one ogre while Feend provided cover fire from the shadows and Fergus invoked Neto’s divine aid. Germy pushed his horse deeper into the cave, while Fergus dismounted to provide martial support. All this occurred under a constant barrage of arrow fire from the goblins. Fergus was able to spar with the remaining ogre for a time, but eventually was knocked unconscious, despite Feend’s unrelenting crossbow support. Seeing his teammate go down, Marshall Tanko rushed to his aid. He disposed of the remaining ogre in a flurry of blows, then knelt to administer a healing potion to Fergus. Realizing the tide of battle was turning, three of the goblins ran deeper into the cave system, leaving just one archer lone to face these dedicated instruments of Neto’s Might.

Questionable Methods

A long time ago in a land far far away…

Feend Gurz and Germy Tanko took one last look around the Farrow graveyard before heading out toward town. On the way, they smelled smoke on the wind. A shadow from the brush appeared and gave the welcome signal of a fellow member of the War Wolves. He introduced himself as Fergus Balad, a cleric in the service of Neto sent to provide backup to their current mission of investigating the undead uprising in Farrow. He told them that a group of goblins led by an orc had set fire to the town and that several townspeople were being held captive in the town square.

Feend sneaked to the area where he saw Jeriah being questioned by the orc. He shot Jeriah, killing her, as Germy and Fergus rushed in to attack the low humanoids of Rodaag. The enemies were soon dispatched and the companions urged the townsfolk to quickly douse the flames. However, they noticed that several other goblinoids had recently fled toward the woods.

The group then went to Mayor Gerrard’s home to see if he was still alive. They found him and his family in the basement. Germy and Fergus headed to the Mallard Inn to pick up the pieces after the battle. But Feend stayed behind to secretly explore the home and upon leaving, set the house ablaze with the mayor and his wife still inside…

A Soldier Falls, But Mission Complete

A long time ago in a land far far away…

Killian Sharpe, Feend Gurz and Germy Tanko found themselves staring down a skeletal warhorse with a skeletal rider on their way to the Farrow graveyard. The rider charged, quickly decapitating Killian. However, Feend and Germy managed to destroy the creatures with Feend shooting arrows from the brush and Germy battled the foes head on. After the battle, they hid Killian in the bushes and Feend heard stern words of disappointment from Neto to Killian.

The duo decided to continue on in search of the missing Glank Stonehand and the source of the undead uprising in Farrow. They entered the graveyard where they came under attack by two orc zombies. Both were slain and they found a map with several nearby villages crossed out, but Farrow circled. After further exploring the area, they entered the crypt to find a secret staircase leading down into a tunnel with a door at the far end. Feend determined that a glyph guarded the door, and they were able to bypass it.

Inside a large chamber was the body of Glank wearing a blue necklace with blue wispy tendrils surrounding him. Also on the floor lying dead was another orc. The tendrils seemed to move toward Germy and a flash from it brought the orc to undeath. Germy was able to break the necklace, but the orc had risen to fight. The two heroes managed to destroy the ghast and discovered several treasures in the crypt before departing…

Heading to the Grave

A long time ago in a land far far away…

Killian Sharpe, Feend Gurz and Germy Tanko continued with their mission to investigate the undead uprising in Farrow and the disappearance of Glank Stonehand. Before Killian was revived from death at the hands of a zombie, he heard the deep voice of Neto boom, “Don’t fail me again.”

With Germy also recovered from his wounds, the companions entered Farrow. They soon separated and headed to different parts of town to gather information about the undead. They were able to determine that the undead seemed to be rising from a nearby graveyard with flashes of light occasionally coming from a mausoleum located within.

Feend was able to convince the stable master to lend them four horses and they set out on a path to the graveyard. Their journey was interrupted when a skeleton on a skeletal horse trampled down the path toward them…

Dropping Like Orcs

A long time ago in a land far far away…

Marshal Killian Sharpe, Deputy Soldier Feend Gurz and Marshal Germy Tanko headed toward the town of Farrow on their way to investigate a recent undead uprising and find work for the missing Glank Stonehand. On the journey, the three War Wolves encountered an orc zombie shambling onto their path. Animated claws dropped from a string around the orc’s neck and all the undead attacked.

The zombie proved to be a formidable foe, dropping Killian and Germy, but Feend was able to eventually finish off the foes. Feend was able to keep Germy alive, but Killian fell into death. Fortunately, Feend was able to find help from the town acolyte, Jeriah. Although Feend did not appreciate the strange pagan wards posted around her home, he allowed her to revive Killian, but the exertion caused her to sink to the ground in exhaustion…

Into the Chaos

Killian Sharpe, Feend Gurz and Germy Tanko were summoned before Priestess Martoth Ren, a high-elf Cleric and their main contact in the War Wolves. They were to set out from Fortess Khyrell in the lower reaches of Chiron to investigate a recent undead uprising in the village of Farrow located in a remote and wild corner of Neto’s dominion. In addition, a previous War Wolf, the dwarf Glank Stonehand, had not been heard from since embarking on his own investigation into Farrow three weeks ago. They were also to find out any information on the missing Glank. Having just been selected for the War Wolves and promoted to Marshal and Soldier, the three Bringers of Might knew the mission was considered low priority and not especially important to the cause against The Hordes. But their loyalty and desire to prove their worth to the War Wolves resolved them to complete the task.

After a week-long journey, they entered the Farrow Wood as the sun began to set on Antor. The narrow, unkempt wagon path through the forest provided relatively clear passage, but pot holes and wheel ruts made going slow. An hour before reaching Farrow, a pot-bellied orc shambled onto the path ahead. It wore a rope strung with hands around its neck but carried no weapons. Although there were no obvious wounds or markings, the creature had the pale eyes and shambling gait of a zombie. And to their further horror, the hands let go of the necklace, fell to the ground and began scrambling toward them…
